Poet and playwright AMIRI BARAKA, cited as a godfather of the US Black Arts Movement, joined us for a London Liming performance and national tour in 2012. This video is a memento and tribute to a spoken word legend who sadly passed away in January 2014.

TILT PRESENTS at UCL's 'One Day in the City'

On 13 June 2014, UCL's English department presented 'One Day in the City' Festival, a day of theatrical walks, talks, readings and performances, art exhibits and London-based conversations

As part of the day, Tilt curated three events:

1pm:'LONDON, LITERATURE and HIDDEN VOICES’: a Spoken Word lecture by JOHN AGARD

3pm: LONDON LIMING with TIM CLARE, patron JOHN AGARD, comedy genius PRINCE ABDI, poets BRIDGET MINAMORE, SOPHIE ROBINSKI of Roundhouse Poets, novelist and short fiction writer NICK BARLAY, musician JAMES INGHAM, host MELANIE ABRAHAMS, and music from DJ: JAMIE RENTON

Tilt, Apples and Snakes and The Albany present TELLING TALES SLAM LIVE

Medieval meets Modern in a sizzling staged slam of talented poets who each take on a character from Patience Agbabi’s new book Telling Tales. The line-up includes PATIENCE AGBABI, FRANCESCA BEARD, DZIFA BENSON, THE SPEECH PAINTER, MICHAEL BROME, KYRILL POTAPOV, SHANE SOLANKI, STEVE TASANE, PETE BEARDER, plus neo-medieval musical responses by PSYKHOMANTUS.

In Memory of Amiri Baraka: 1934 - 2014

The start of 2014 saw the sad passing of AMIRI BARAKA, a prolific poet, novelist, playwright, music critic, editor, and cultural organiser, who extended the possibilities of modern writing. Following a day-long symposium at the ICA, the evening performance will mark the late poet’s life and work with readings by poets and speakers, many of whom knew him well, including LINTON KWESI JOHNSON, JEAN 'BINTA' BREEZE, KAYO CHINGONYI, SEAN BONNEY, MICHAEL ZAND, MELANIE ABRAHAMS and YVETTE HEYLIGER.

Accompanied by cellist TONY WOOLLARD (Cello Journeys), writer and actress SOPHIE WOOLLEY performed a satirical monologue at our spoken word festival Something I Said?. The piece was inspired by classic film 'Brief Encounter' and random snippets of literature gathered via upsidedown reading on the train.
